Alright, got to the stadium around 7.25, after hanging out at the Taste for an hour or so. Heard the end of the opening band (any idea who it was) - got there just in time for the 10 minute drizzle that was all the rain for the night. Sat around for another 40 minutes, til dave came onstage at 8.17 PM. Throughout the night, dave added in giberish phrases between songs, in addition to his common "Thank ya'll very much"
JTR - Boyd was ripping it up on this one - would have been nice to have a little rain to go with it, but it kinda dissapeared. Leroi had a nice solo as well, and i'm pretty sure i saw him switch instruments at least once during the song. After a short break, they break out into...
Instrumental Intro - Longer than normal. Not sure if they've been playing this intro this year - same thing the girl sitting next to me asked. Leroi stole the show at this point, playing his heart out. Next came...
OSW - Despite the fact this was coming, the whole crowd exploded at the start of this. Pretty standard, but kept the level of energy high. I'm actually pretty surprised that this didn't open - maybe they were expecting the rain still.
WtWE - Right off the album, but great nonetheless. Entire crowd was helping them sing along on this, and even though it was still kind of light out, the abrupt end worked out well. Obligitory cheers after the "we'll be burning one" :-) he used the electric.
Granny - Crowd totally joined in on the "Love - Baby!" parts. Energy is running so high at this point... entire crowd is just roaring for these guys. Pretty standard, but tons of fun.
Dave introduces stefan - "Stefan lessard, on the bass guitar" and the band heads into...
Crush - Our whole section was in awe at this one. I must say that this song just rocks live - i've heard it on cd's before, but they just don't do it justice. Whole band jammed at the end of it, finishing with a crazy carter drum solo. Dave says "Carter Beuford on the drums, everyone" and a wild cheer goes through the crowd.
Dave says "There's a big body of water near here, and this song's about someone who used to live in the water" 5 of us call BEF to be next :-) Dave doesn't dissapoint and goes into...
Big Eyed Fish - Fish Man Monkey (screwed me up, i was expecting FMoMa, or MaMoF) this time. Lots of crowd noise at "stay up your fucking tree"... at the end of the lyrics, i call bartender... After this song, there were about 5 minutes of rocking solos, ending up with leroi's pennywhistle solo and going into...
Bartender - Boyd played his opeining note for about 2 minutes during the pennywhistle solo before the song started. Boyd stole the show for this song. Amazing violin solos, and it was nice to have just the band on stage for both this song and BEF(not uncommon, i know. but still). Leroi pulled out the pennywhistle again. At the end of the song, "Leroi moore, on the pennywhistle"... Short break, as monk switches guitars with dave, and they bust into...
So Right - Awesome leroi song. He is showcased throughout, with a couple rockin solos. This song is better live than on the cd, and i like it a lot on the cd. At the beginning, the ladies/Butch weren't there, but they came out a minute or so before the end, and butch played a mean solo. After this, it looked like dave switched guitars, then changed his mind and switched back, keeping the electric out for
If I Had it all - Not a bad song, but a bit slow. a lot of people used this as a bathroom song... had i needed to go, i probly would have too. IT was ok, just not GREAT like most of the concert was. Next, 3 of us see the ladies still out, and the electric, and realize this could only mean one thing....
I Did It - This song is so much better live than it is on the CD. The ladies don't do much during this song, which isn't really a bad thing. Great song.
Seek Up - Ladies disspaeared, Monk passed dave his yellow accoustic, and out comes the opening chords of the BEST dmb song. Being a nerd, i glanced at my watch - 9.30. Several people around me (not used to mid-set seek up's, i suppose) said "Are you kidding me?" Leroi pulled a long solo before the words even started, and the entire band followed his example throughout the song. Butch rocked towards the end of the song, although it took him a while to get in the groove. There were a couple of small lyrical changes, including the "6 billion proud" that's becoming fairly standard, and the removal of some "yeah yeah yeah"s in places i was expecting them :-) Overall, an amazing song, with awesome solo's, and tons of fun. On the screens towards the end, it showed carter, who looked like he was just having a blast - reminded me of an old dave quote "Carter could just sit back there, fry an egg and play the baddest drums you ever seen". Ended at 9.48 - 18 minutes of pure joy for me.
Ladies come back out, Monk brings back the electric and they bust into...
Fool to Think - I was expecting space between, but i must say this song has come a long way since they first played it live. It's actually a LOT better than the cd version, and the energy he put into it rocked as well.
Angel - Dave kept on the electric (if i remember right) and hardly stopped between these two. Great song, but the outro with the ladies is kinda ehhh. When they go through and do the little solos' with everyone, it's pretty cool though, and the crowd loved their "angels" things - cheering wildly when they were pointed to :-).
Watchtower - Dave starts playing the chords to Diggin a Ditch before this, i swear. Stefan pulled a LONG (2-3 min) solo at the beginning, and i didn't have a clue whether he was gonna play watchtower or DaD. Dave continued to play DaD under stefan's bass, and i was amazed when stefan ended taht they went into watchtower. (anyone see the original setlist?) It was amazing - the crowd was dancing crazy the whole time, loving the beat, and just amazing hearing the cheers. I figured this would close the set, and a high note it would have been. Dave walks away, and it looks like they're about to walk off, when he comes back to the mic, and says "Chicago style... hot dogs, Chicago style... Bean Pies (?), Chicago style... " and the whole band breaks into....
Two Step - Amazing! Dave's opening verse (mumble verse) was something like "Hey... remember when we were so small. and everything seemed enoug to be a wall. But now we're big, and everyone thinks we're not so small anymore...." or soemthing like that. The whole crowd was hushed as he sang it, and then cheered as they headed into the other verses. The whole band was together on this, and butch too. The lights on both this song and watchtower were incredible. Great way to end the concert, as dave says "thanks ya'll for coming out" and they walk off.
after about 5 min, they come back out, dave grabs the electric, and i'm thinking maybe everyday? but i was wrong, and he breaks into...
TSB - Standard, but still a fun song. Ladies don't hurt this song, and it was another singalong song. After this, he switched back to accoustic, and i had no idea what was coming next. He strums the first chord to....
PNP->Rapunzel - A shock. I've been waiting for this song all tour, and i loved hearing it. It was nice to hear another oldie, and it wasn't what i was expecting at all. Lights were great on this too. This ended the night on a great note,as we all filed out, and carter tossed his drumsticks into the crowd.
On the way home, i met some pretty fun drunks from geneva (next to my hometown) and we had some fun on the train ride home. They've got floor seats tonight, and i'm supposed to meet them on the train, and hang out at the taste with em for awhile. I have some more stuff to say, but i got to go now - overall, great show!!!
